Regions Bank website outage caused by cyber attack (updated)

Regions Bank website outage caused by cyber attack (updated)

2:00 p.m.: More from Regions: while the website outage has been confirmed to be the result of a DDoS attack, the bank has not yet confirmed that the web outage caused issues for CheckCard customers.

The bank has also confirmed that only some, not all of its CheckCard customers were impacted this morning.

1:43 p.m.: Regions Bank was the target of a cyber attack -- more specifically, a distributed denial of service (DDos) attack -- on Friday, causing service issues for many customers.

A Regions Bank spokesperson has provided a statement, included here in full:

Access to regions.com and online banking were disrupted intermittently today by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. Some customers may have also been unable to use their CheckCards at ATMs or at merchants. We apologize for the difficulties this has caused and are working to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

12:51 p.m.: A Regions spokesperson confirms that the bank is aware of an issue that impacted customers' ability to use their check cards for purchases and at ATMs, and is investigating the root cause.

The latest social media comments suggest the debit card issue has since been resolved.

12:45 p.m.: Regions' website is indeed back online, but a message posted to the website says online banking is unavailable.

12:36 p.m.: Regions.com is once again working for some customers, and multiple customers are reporting that they can successfully use their debit cards.

Others say the website is still down. In some cases, customers can access the site but cannot log in.

Earlier: Regions Bank is once again having issues with its web presence. And several customers are reporting that their debit cards are being declined.

The bank's website, regions.com, was unavailable shortly before noon on Friday. The outage appears to have begun around 11 a.m., based on user-submitted comments at the bank's Facebook page.

The cause of the outage -- be it internal or external -- is not yet clear.

Others on social media say their debit cards are not working.

Another customer says she was able to use her debit card, but added that she chose to use it as a credit card.

Shortly before noon, the bank acknowledged the web issues with a statement on its Facebook page. Shortly after noon, a spokesperson for the bank confirmed via email that the bank was aware of the service disruption.

Should the outage persist, it would be the second time in four months that the bank's website went down for customers. In April, the website became unavailable after Regions Bank allowed its domain registration for regions.com to expire.

This story is developing.

Comment from a bank spokesperson was added at 12:24 p.m. Around 2 p.m. the story's headline suggested there may be a causality between the DDoS attack and the limited debit card outage, but the bank has not yet confirmed a tie between the two.
