Regions Bank website down, domain not renewed? (updated)

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Regions Bank's home page was temporarily unavailable for many web users on Monday morning.

11:01 a.m.: Regions Bank has taken to Twitter to offer an expanded explanation of its website issues.

A series of tweets read: "We apologize if you're having trouble accessing regions.com this morning. We are experiencing an intermittent network issue impacting some customers' ability to access the site. If you've downloaded the Regions Mobile banking app, you can use it to access your accounts."
For many customers, visits to regions.com on Monday morning yielded a generic website, pictured. The company may be having issues with domain renewal.
10:40 a.m.: Regions has renewed its ownership of the regions.com domain, a call to Network Solutions confirmed, and is now set to expire in 2023. However, even after clearing the cache, service does not appear to have been restored to regions.com.

10:26 a.m.: Whois.net, a service that tracks domain registration,confirms that Regions' domain expired on April 13, 2013.

9:45 a.m.: A visit to www.regions.com yields a generic web page with branding for Network Solutions, a domain-hosting service (see image, right). Attempts to access the website from several different computers in locations across the U.S. yielded mixed results, according to an informal survey conducted by AL.com.

The generic site that appeared for several users suggests that Regions may be having an issue with renewing its domain, a crucial step for keeping a website online continuously.

Comments posted by Regions Bank's Facebook account to its own page acknowledged issues with online banking. Regions Bank spokesperson Evelyn Mitchell said via email, "We are experiencing an intermittent network issue that is impacting some customers' ability to access our web site. We are working to resolve this issue quickly and apologize to our customers."

AL.com's Madison Underwood contributed to this report.

Updated at 10:08 a.m. to include comment from Regions spokesperson submitted via email, and at 10:28 a.m. to include Whois.net information.
